Wicked, that smash hit musical from the partnership of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, based on the book by Gregory Maguire which was itself an adapted prequel to the Frank L. Baum classic, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” is one of those musicals that no one can get enough of. With a soundtrack that any composer would be proud to call their own, a number of Tony’s to the shows’ credit and a fan-base that is nothing short of spectacular, this musical telling the tale of the two childhood friends who would grow to become Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is one of those shows that you simply must see for yourself.
Last week alone, for the week ending on July 15, 2007, Wicked was the highest grossing musical on the Great White Way, pulling in $1,468,400 in that week alone, with the capacity of the theater 100% filled. This is indeed a great feat and should serve as a reminder of just how popular Wicked is, spurring patrons who have never seen the show to get into line with those who attend shows on a weekly basis. Lenny Wolpe has taken over the role of the Wizard, which he originated in workshops of Wicked, and he is now playing the role on Broadway. Since July 10, 2007 when he stepped back into the shoes of the character whom he workshopped so long ago, Wolpe has greatly enjoyed being back on the stage in the all-powerful role of the Wizard of Oz, which he took over from David Garrison who left the cast on July 8, 2007.
The rest of the current cast of Wicked include Julia Murney as Elphaba, Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda, Jayne Hoydyshell as Madame Morrible, Sebastian Arcelus as Fiyero, Cristy Candler as Nessarose, Logan LIpton as Boq and Steven Skybell as Dr. Dillamond, all coming togehter to create the kind of show you cannot see anywhere else and one which you could be foolish to miss out on if you have the chance to view it for yourself!
Previously Wolpe has appeared on Broadway in such hits as The Drowsy Chaperone, The Sound of Music, Cooperfield, Into The Light and Onward Victoria among many other shows, so he certainly knows what it takes to do his part to make a great show. Now that he has the strongest role in this show, after all, everyone knows who the Wizard of Oz is, you can bet he is thoroughly enjoying himself! If one of your favorite things about the Wizard of Oz novel and subsequent film and stage adaptations is the existence of Toto, Dorothy’s dog, then you should be happy to know that the existence of puppy love is not gone even though the smash-hit “Wicked” takes place before Dorothy and her little dog ever arrived in the Emerald City on their search for the Wizard.
At least within the toruing cast of this show, one man has made quite a move towards convincing his cast members to appreciate the companionship and joy a dog can bring to a person’s life. Actor Paul Slade Smith joined up with the touring cast of “Wicked” two years ago, and with him he brought his own dog, named Charlie, who is a border collie mix. Charlie is such a good and obediant puppy, and such a companion for Slade while he’s on the road, that othe rmembers of the cast have taken it upon themselves to adopt puppies to be their loyal friends and traveling buddies.
Yes, Slade has surely started a trend, and it just happens to be fitting that the actors in a show that is set in a land that prompts a little girl named Dorothy to og exploring with her own little puppy, should start bringing their own puppies along as they continue on in their journey to bring the catchy lyrics and fun music of “Wicked” to life every night. Wicked is one of those musicals so great and so thoroughly enjoyable that all who see it fall in love with it. This is not only due to the stunning music and lyrics and the great overall show as it was imagined and brought to life by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, but it is also due to the man behind the novel that inspired this staged adaptation, Gregory Maguire.
The author of the novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” penned a truly great storyline telling the tale of what happened before Dorothy ever visited Oz, and it is truly a testament to his work that fans flock to watch this storyline unfold, with all its universal truths and relatable nature.
Now this same author will be able to be seen by you and all other Wicked fans, live in person. Gregory Maguire will be signing books and doing a reading on July 14, 2007 at Sweet Christopher’s at 601 Centre St., Jamaica Plain. This reading and book signing promises to be a great time not only for those who are in love with the musical Wicked, but also for those who appreciate and have enjoyed all of Maguire’s great books, of which there are many. So make sure you check out this book signing, and definitely make sure you get tickets to see Wicked at stubhub.com today!
Just because cast members tend to change wtihin shows as the runs get longer and the fans flocking to see each nights performances get into longer lines still, let’s take a quick look at who two of the most well-known characters within Wicked are being played by in the touring cast, today. Victoria Matlock is playing that green-skinned belter Elphaba, while Christina DeCicco is playing the role of Glinda, The Good Witch. Without a doubt both of these actreses have the chops and the vocal ranges to carry off the roles in which they have been cast, but what might be surprising is that neither of these women came from necessarily expansive careers on the Broadway stage before they were cast in this touring production of one of the hottest shows Broadway has seen in years.
Cast in roles that fans of all ages are able to idenitify with, Matlock and DeCicco are facing a heretofore unknown celebrity as fans wait at the stage door after each nights performances, hoping for autographs and photos. For their parts, these two female leads happily oblige, loving their respective fifteen minutes of fame, and still surprised that fans not only know every song sung by their characters, but that they know these actresses’ names as well. For your chance to see these two loveable actresses in their great roles, make sure you check out stubhub.com today to see when the show will be in your town and get yourself tickets!
