From Wicked to Oz

The Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus is celebrating the all the tunes that inspired “Wicked” and beyond in a show titled “Wicked to Oz,” a summer concert that combines favorite selections from the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Wiz” and the Broadway show “Wicked.” With direction of Artistic Director Rich Cook the company is wrapping up their eighth season with a unique and original story line that will be presented July 17th at 8pm and July 18th at 3 and 8pm at the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine. “We have created an original story that ties together the best loved songs from these three beloved musicals. Along with several fully staged production numbers, a specially built set and more than 300 costumes this will be our most elaborate production to date. Our summer shows have become known for their light and exciting music with a spectacular visual approach. What could be more spectacular than traveling to both ends of the Wizard of Oz spectrum - contemporary music and beloved standars - and mixing them together with lots of visual excitement?” Cook said to the Pitch Engine.  If you want to see this take on the Wizard story get your Wicked tickets today!

Wicked’s Former Star in Sin City

Shoshana Bean, formerly of Wicked, is joining another kind of wicked fun stage show this year as another dancing queen with Mel B in “Peepshow,” the Las Vegas adult-themed feature from Tony Award winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell. The former Elphaba, who was the first to replace original Tony Award winning Idina Menzel in the role on Broadway of the green witch, and will assume the role of “The Peep Diva” while former PlayBoy bunny and Hugh Hefner partner Holly Madison will take over as “Bo Peep.” Both will begin their roles for June 22. “Shoshana is a brilliant and gifted performer and a perfect fit for “Peepshow,” Scott Zeiger of BASE Entertainment said to Playbill. “She is a triple threat - she can sing, dance and act and her theatrical experience will bring a whole new elemennt to the stage at Planet Hollywood.” The Los Angeles Times got an interview with the new star who said “I was in the original company of ‘Hairspray’ back in 2002 and Jerry Mitchell was the choreographer on that. So, when he was conceiving ‘Peepshow’ there was a lot of discussion and it finally worked out….SB: I mostly have a background in musical theater and Broadway. After “Hairspray,” I did “Wicked” for about two years. And this winter I released my solo album, and I have been hustling that and touring and promoting my own stuff. I sang backup for a lot of pop stars back in the day like Michael Jackson. And, doing an album is what I really wanted to do and finally I was able to get a minute to do it. That is what the past couple years have been about.

Wicked at the Majestic Theatre

The Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas is currently enjoying the Wicked run as flying monkeys soar through the stage, witches cackle at every turn and a dragon constantly exhales smokes and bubbles from his deep and dark mouth. The play is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel which tried to understand the backgrounds of the two witches that make up the story of Dorothy - the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch, Glinda. Maguire gave the Wicked Witch of the West a first name, Elphaba, that tips itself to the original writer of Oz L. Frank Baum, and took to the history of Oz. Though the majority of Wicked doesn’t meet up with “Wizard of Oz’s” story until the very end, which the play mostly recalls the 1939 film set more than the novel, but for those fans many Wizard of Oz questions are ansowered including “How did the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow come to be in such a state? Where did that green skin come from? Etc…If you want to see the show while playing at the Majestic Theatre, from Tuesdays-Friday, 2 and 8pm, Saturdays 2 and 7:30pm and Sunday check out Wicked tickets from StubHub.

Wicked is Going “Down Under”

The Broadway hit musical Wicked is set to finally apear in Australia, opening in Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in September after premiering in the country in Melbourne’s Regent Theatre last July. “Wicked is unique,” said Australian production’s co-producer John Frost. “It’s a pennomenon, quite unlike any other musical. Wicked comes with all the blockbuster bells and whistles, certainly. But aside from its spectacle, wonderful lyrics and score, its wit and warmth, Wicked also touches other, unexpected and intriqing emotions.” John Frost is a two time Tony Award winner that has never experienced something quite like Wicked, he admits. “This show brings in people who’ve never seen a musical; people who never thought they would go inside a theatre. They all spread the Wicked word. That is a show that grows by word of mouth in a way and to a degree unlike any I know.” If you want to enjoy this show in all its glimmar and glam in Syndey or any other place this season, check out all the places Wicked tickets are available via StubHub today!

San Antonio’s Wicked Approach

The national tour of “Wicked” is coming for the first time to the Majestic Theatre and Glinda, played by Katie Rose Clarke, knows that each night she gets to open up to a audience full in her favor. From the concept of the film “Wizard of Oz,” Glinda flys through the stage in a clear bubble that has everyone cheering - “it’s pretty awesome; it doesn’t get old,” she says. “I’m not a huge fan of heights. You’re up 20, 30 feet in the air. It’s a narrow space, really high up. It took a lot of deep breathing and praying to calm myself down (at first). Now i’m so used to it; it’s kind of fun.”

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, she says the story: “I think it’s such a fun thing about the show, that it’s about this strong relationship between two female characters who help each other grow and become close and go through problems and life changes, and how they come through it as friends at the end,” Clarke continued iwth My San Antonio. “That’s a very fun dynamic.” If you want to catch these characters live and in action, get your Wicked tickets today from StubHub.

Five Years and Still Defying Gravity

“Wicked,” was nominated for ten Tony Awards the year it first premiered on Broadway (2004) and went home with three, including Best Leading Actress for Menzel (though Chenoweth was also nominated), and Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design. While the play lost of Avenue Q for Best Musical, the Wicked stage has continued to see success with six Drama Desk Awards and nominations for Laurence Olivier Awards three years later. Though it isn’t a specific category, the music of Wicked remains one of the most well known aspect of the show, including the single “Defying Gravity” that was song by Menzel as Elphababa. Here are the powerful lyrics, and to see it performed live get Wicked tickets today:

why couldn’t you have stayed calm for

once, instead of flying off the handle!
(sung) I hope you’re happy!
I hope you’re happy now
I hope you’re happy how you
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you’re clever!

ELPHABA
I hope you’re happy
I hope you’re happy, too
I hope you’re proud how you
Would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition

BOTH
So though I can’t imagine how
I hope you’re happy right now

GLINDA
(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you’re sorry:
(sung) You can still be with the Wizard
What you’ve worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted:

ELPHABA
(spoken) I know:
(sung) But I don’t want it -
No - I can’t want it
Anymore:

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It’s time to try
Defying gravity
I think I’ll try
Defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down!
