As many of us know Wicked, the Musical, recently opened for a second time in San Francisco. The musical, which has been warmly welcomed to that city, will soon be welcoming Patty Duke to the part of Madame Morrible, replacing Carol Kane. Carol Kane, whose performance in the part has been widely acclaimed, had a short-term contract with the musical, and will be leaving on March 22.
Patty Duke is an award-winning actress who made her Broadway debut in 1959 in the play The Miracle Worker, where she starred as Helen Keller. Her next appearence on Broadway was in the Isle of Children in 1962, playing Deirdre Striden. 40 years passed before she again arrived in Broadway as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! In between these times she has had a successful television, singing, and movie career. Over the years she has garnered an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards.
The part of Madame Morrible is a fascinating one, the presence of this grandios figure filters through the entire story, although her influence in the musical is not as enormous in regards to the fates of the characters as it is in the book. However, the part of Madame Morrible is one that people are certain to delight in.
