Wicked was first published by Gregory Maguire in 1995, and since then the story has grown into massive popularity. Since the stage version first appeared as a musical in 2003, the story has become even more famous as it draws more and more fans into Maguire’s story-telling mastery. Since the publication of Wicked, Maguire has added to the story with Son of A Witch and A Lion Among Men. Two stories that perpetuate the tale of Oz with further twistings of plot, and fascinating turns of events.
Son of A Witch was the first addition to the story, and was published on September 27, 2005. The story takes place where Wicked left off, with her death. She leaves behind the young boy, Liir who may or may not be her song, to either carry on her legacy or to follow a separate path of his own making. Fascinating and well-written, one wonders whether this story will also make it to the stage in the coming years, or not.
Lion Among Men was published last year, on October 14, 2008. It tells the story of Brrr - The Cowardsly Lion, who is searching for information on Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. His journeys have brought him to Yackle, the oracle who hovered on the sidelines of Elphaba’s life.

The organization was begun because many actors during the 19th Century were ostracized from society and treated as lower-class citizens. They were often denied charity and assistance and at times were even denied a proper burial.
Wicked, is the single most popular show on stage today. It tells the story of Elphaba, the young girl who grows up to become known as The Wicked Witch of the West; and her best friend, Galinda, who eventually changes her name to Glinda and becomes known as…you guessed it, Glinda the Good Witch. The musical has taken the classic American story and turned it on its head. This fantastic show is currently the number one best seller on Broadway. Wicked, the Musical, is now a veteran, albeit a young veteran, of the stage. The musical has become one of the most popular stage productions in the US and is gaining in popularity world-wide. It is the story of the witches of Oz, and how they came to be the women that Dorothy knew when she arrived in that strange world only to find that the house that she arrived in had killed the Wicked Witch of the East. The musical sheds new light on the story, showing how the the Wicked Witch of the West was really just a girl misunderstood because of the color of her skin, and how Glinda the Good Witch might not have been as good as she first appeared.

Wicked is incredibly popular for many reasons, most of which have to do with the excellent direction, production, design and acting that audiences are treated to when they attend the show. However there are many other elements of the show that are incredibly appealing to audiences of a wide range of ages. One extremely popular theme that runs through the show has to do with the subversiveness of differences, which is most strongly presented in the character of Elphaba. Not only is our heroine’s skin green but her personality is very different from those around her. Her physical difference also makes her look look at the world and others in a way that is set apart from her peers.
As the young Elphaba begins to learn how to interpret her place in Oz, she also shows a remarkable ability to look at things in a way that is very much independent of the society that she grew up in. She does not simply accept what she is told as fact, but judges things based on her own experiences. As Wicked tickets continue to be incredibly popular, this unique and appealing theme that runs through the musical can easily be considered one of the greatest appeals that he story has to theater-goers.
Idina Menzel is scheduled to perform a solo set on campus at New York’s Syracuse University tonight, as announced in the school’s independent newspaper, The Daily Orange. The star who first made a name for herself when she originated the role of Elphaba in the wildly popular Broadway production of Wicked, will be performing songs from her recent album I Stand as well as several numbers from Broadway shows. Alongside her performance in Wicked stands Idina’s performance in Rent, both of which served to propel her to superstardom on Broadway, and now as a hit singer/songwriter as well.
Those who bought Wicked tickets in 2003, were priveleged to enjoy Menzel’s groundbreaking performance in the starring role of Elphaba. Today, her music career is inspired by the likes of Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand. And now Mackled as well, singing her own songs on stage. enzel is taking on the challenge that both her favorite stars as this incredibly talented artist continues to grow in popularity. Her recent Billboard chart album I Stand, generated several hit songs including “Take Me or Leave Me,” “Brave,” “Gorgous,” and the song “Defying Gravity” which has become known as her signature song from Wicked.
As one of the favorites to win American Idol, Wicked’s Adam Lambert is still standing tall in the hit TV series that is once again taking America by storm. Country music week proved a bit difficult for the enigmatic Adam, but he did manage to create something entirely unusual and new with his rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” Blog, internet articles, fans and even the judges seem a bit divided about Adam’s performance, with one article calling it “weird or brilliant or bizzarre.” Despite some confusion about his performance, there is no doubt that since his days as the understudy for Fiyero in Wicked, Adam Lambert has really blossomed as an entertainer and showman.
Wicked tells the story of the witches of Oz, before Dorothy comes on the scene. It answers the questions: “What was Glinda the Good Witch like as a child?” and “Who was the Wicked Witch of the West before she became notoriously famous, as the cackling creature who terrorized the skies of Oz?” The part of Fiyero is that of the young prince who is the love interest of both witches and who plays an important role in the women that they become when they leave school. This is a great musical to see live, so get your Wicked tickets today, before they are all sold out!
