Drawing from later in the musical, there is also an Elphaba doll, complete with her ragged, many-layered red and black dress. Reminiscence on Wicked

Most Americans will have, at some point in our lives, seen the movie Wizard of Oz. Most of us will only remember the film vaguely from our childhood, recalling something of the lines:

Ding Dong! The Witch is dead.

Which Old Witch? The Wicked Witch!

Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is dead!

The song that the munchkins sing when Dorothy’s house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East. And then we may also recall, if somewhat vaguely, the song “We’re Off to See The Wizard.” The song where Dorothy and the Scarecrow head off on a wild adventure across Oz, meeting the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion along the way.

But, sometime in 1995 our entire perception of Dorothy, the Wizard and the Wicked Witch of the West were comepletely turned on their heads when Gregory Maguire published his book Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book took the story, turned it around and set it on its head. Then in 2003, the musical had its world premiere in San Francisco, and we were all completely taken aback.

In Wicked we meet a girl that is barely recognizable as the Wicked Witch that Dorothy melts in the Wizard of Oz. Instead we find ourselves face-to-face with a young woman whose green skin is the only thing to connect her to the witch.  Her fiery spirit and passionate care for truth, life and others is something entirely different from the wicked green woman who imprisoned the flying monkeys and wrecked havoc with Dorothy and her friends. This incredibly fascinating musical is currently playing in Appleton, Wisconsin; New York; and San Francisco, California. Get your Wicked tickets today!

The Word Wicked

Wicked the hit Broadway musical, is a story that challenges traditional concepts of what it means to be “good” and what it means to be “wicked.” The word, according to traditional definitions means:

  • Severe, intensely wrong/bad or unpleasant.
  • Something that disgusts, arousing distaste, aversion or disgust.
  • Also associated with the world “evil.”

The word has also come to mean many different things in popularly used slang, including:

  1. Very good or excellent, also meaning cool. when used as an adjective.
  2. Very, really or extremely; when it is used as an adverb. Especially in the UK.

In the book Wicked, the life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West and the musical Wicked, the word is treated as a social justification for the creation of a scapegoat.

Wicked Has Left Chicago

Wicked just finished its final week in Chicago, to the sorrow of many fans of the musical, some of whom have seen it more than once in the three years that it enjoyed Windy City hospitality. The musical once again broke box office records in its final, and 188th, week, selling $1,551,191 in ticket sales. During its Chicago run the musical renewed the interest in Chicago theater and prompted a much larger theater-going audience that had previously enjoyed the stage in that city.

Despite the sadness of Chicago fans, however, other cities are very excited as the end of the Chicago run means that it is just a little more than a month before the second national tour of Wicked is launched. It will be the first time that Wicked has had two separate national tours going at the same time. It also means that the show can visit cities that it has not been able to visit before. It also means that Wicked tickets will be able to spend an entire month in San Diego, to the delight of Southern Californians, as opposed to the mere two short weeks of last year.
