One of the many great parts of seeing Wicked is the wonderful costumes that have been designed for the show. The costumes were all designed by Susan Hilferty, who was heavily influenced by Dr. Seuss. The costumes were designed to signify each character’s personal journey. In the beginning act of the musical the character of Elphaba wears dark blue, one of the colors of their school, Shiz. Galinda/Glinda wears white, the other school color. Later on in the musical Glinda wears a pink party outfit, symbolic of her social standing as the popular girl at school.
In the second act, and through the end of the musical, the outfits are much more detailed and layered versions of the clothing worn in act one. While during act one Galinda/Glinda wore a short white dress, in act two her white dress is elaborate, floor-length…a version of every little girl’s idea of a fairy-tale princess. Elphaba, on the other hand, wears a quilted black dress made of many different fabrics with red accents. In the final scene the striking dissimilarities between the two characters are evident as they sing their final song together, “For Good.” This is definitely a musical worth seeing for its visual and artistic benefits as much as for its importance asĀ a work of art. Wicked tickets are a great buy, so don’t miss out.
