The Word on Wicked

Wicked the Musical, is one musical that is going places fast, and in our postmodern world we wonder what exactly is behind the success of this musical. One part of its success is that this is truly an exceptional musical, cast choices for all performances have been excellent, it is a visual feast of scene design, and the story and music are appealing.

A second appeal that the musical has is that it does have something for just about every age group. There is the story of the two teenage girls who are discovering themselves, the talking animals, the mature and philosphical undercurrents of the story, and so much more.

A final appeal, that has been not been talked about very much but is definitely present, is the philosophy of reletive truth. Elphaba is named as “wicked” in the musical because she stands against the “powers tha be” and does not  succumb to the standards of the day. By turning the perspectives of the preceeding story (The Wizard of Oz) on its head, the musical turns good and evil into an issue of perspective…to an extent. The character who we loathed in Oz has become a sympathetic figure in this new story, and the Glinda…well you’ll just have to see the musical to see what you think of her. Musical on Tour

Wicked the Musical is on tour and it is selling out shows well in advance. Ticket offices in Florida and Appleton have already had extremely long lines at the box office, not to mention Detroit (where the show is currently playing). Wicked has become an international sensation not just as a musical but also as the original book that the musical is based on.

The book is much more dark and politically driven than the musical, but both have been equally well accepted. The musical has become so popular that it is now being predicted to be on stage for quite a few years longer. In fact many people are speculating that the musical could eventually rival the success star shows such as Phantom of the Opera and Cats. Get your Wicked tickets today!

The Wicked Saga

Wicked the Musical has become one of the biggest phenomenons on Broadway, and the book is just as big a phenomenon in the publishing world. Though it is taking Gregory Maguire a little longer to become as big, he seems to be filling the same place in Adult publishing that J.K. Rowling filled with her Harry Potter series. Maguire published his book Wicked several years before Rowling finished Harry Potter, but it is considerably more difficult for stories of this type to become big in the adult realm than the children’s book realm.

These books are in many ways much darker than Harry Potter, personal and political dramas that explore the struggles that have been present in Maguire’s own life. The series has now grown to three parts, with Lion Among Men as the most recent instalment in what is now being called The Wicked Years. Wicked in Florida

Wicked is going to be appearing in Fort Myers in March, as a part of the show’s 2008/2009 tour. As tickets went on sale more than 100 people lined up to get tickets outside the Barbara B. Mann theater, where the show will be playing. With spine-tingling scores such as “Defying Gravity” it is no wonder that this incredible musical is the one that everyone wants to see.

Wicked is the story that comes before Dorothy arrives in Oz. It shows what happened and where the Wicked Witch of the West really came from. As the young girl with the slightly strange…well very strangely green skin, to the woman that she becomes and why, this show will give you a whole to perspective on Oz. Wicked tickets are your entry into Oz, the Oz that we have only seen the beginning of so far….

The Authors of Oz

The story of the Wicked Witch of the West is one that first became known when L. Frank Baum published his book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story was made into a Broadway show becoming the biggest hit of the season, and was eventually made into a famous movie starring Judy Garland in 1939. Sadly Baum never saw the movie, because he died in 1919, 20 years before the movie was released. Little did he know that the story of Oz had become so big that his publishers would ensure that the legacy would carry on after Baum’s death.

Ruth Plumly Thompson was the next writer to carry the torch for the world that Baum had created. She wrote 19 annual titles following the death of Baum, all contributed to by illustrator John R. Neill, who would write three more titles between 1940 and 1942. The series finally finished in 1963 with a total of 40 Oz books in the original series.

There are few people today who know nothing of the newest author of Oz, Gregory Maguire. Maguire is a now world-famous author who wrote the prequel to the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which he published in 1995. Wicked: The Life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West was published by ReganBooks starting Maguire off on his road to international stardom. Wicked became a musical in 2003, eight years later. And is now one of the most popular shows on Broadway and around the world. Maguire’s other Wicked books include Son of A Witch about the son…or the boy who might be the son, of the Wicked Witch, and A Lion Among Men about the life of the Cowardly Lion. Wicked has become one of the most popular shows around, and despite the fact that it has been going more than five years. The musical started in 2003, and has not stopped selling out shows since then. The musical has recently been compared to shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Les Miserable, which top the charts as the longest running shows on Broadway. Soshana Bean Turns to R&B

Soshana Bean is most widely known for her starring role as Elphaba in the hit Broadway musical Wicked, which has earned her worldwide recognition. The title song from the album, Superheroes, was chosen by NBC to promote its Monday-night lineup, which “Heroes” is a part of. The songs on the album are contemporary and urban, tinged with R&B.

Bean is not the first star from Wicked to launch a music career. So far the stars from Wicked who have successful solo careers include Indina Menzel, Julia Murney, and Kristin Chenowith. The show is not only known for its rave reviews and sell-out shows, but also for launching the careers of several actresses who are not some of Broadway’s greatest.
