Going Green on the Great White Way

Elphaba, the popular heroine from Broadway’s hit musical Wicked helped to launch the “Broadway Goes Green” initiative yesterday. The role was a fitting one for a character who has become associated with caring for the environment. In the musical and the original book, the younger Elphaba plays an integral role in the future of her country when she frees a young sentient lion cub who is in danger of becoming the victim of a science experiment.

Broadway’s green initiative involves plans to use energy-saving bulbs and recycling their stage sets in order to eliminate some of the waste that has taken place in the past. Ten of the theaters on Broadway have replaced a collected 10,000 bulbs with energy-efficient ones. In one year’s time all of Broadway’s theaters will have made the switch. Other changes will include using more environmentally friendly materials in the scenery, recycling and reusing props, washing costumes in cold water and using rechargeable batteries where possible. What better way to help celebrate these positive changes than by getting Wicked tickets to see this hit Broadway musical and enjoy the changes that are being made?
