Wicked has a lot to do with witches, so this Friday we’re going to give you the scoop on witches, historical, modern day and fictional. Enjoy:
Witch Facts:
- A male witch is actually considered a witch, not a warlock, by modern Wicca-style witches. No separate-but-equal here.
- While Satanists use the inverted pentagram enclosed in a circle, witches use the right-side-up pentagram, enclosed in a circle. These different symbols mean very different things. The four elements- air, fire, earth, water- are located below the fifth element- the creator. Typically, witches don’t worship Satan.
- 29 people were accused of being witches in the famous Salem Witch trials.
- Giles Cory, an 80-year old man who was accused of being a witch in Salem, was crushed to death for more than two days, until he finally died without having confessed to being a witch.
- Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter series has four houses, Gryfindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.
- Cate Blanchett portrays Galadriel, and elf witch, in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
