Who Is Madame Morrible?

Madame Morrible is one of the key characters in the hit Broadway musical, Wicked. The story of Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, is told with the presence of Madame Morrible always lurking in the background. Is she simply the teacher of sorcery that she seems to be at the beginning? Or is she something much more? The teacher who seems to have a close relationship with the Wizard is also the woman who seems to be at the background of every political movement in the land of Oz.

There is currently a small host of incredible actresses playing the part of Madame Morrible in cities in the US and around the world. Tony Award nominee, Theatre World Award and AEA Richard Seff Award winner Jayne Houdyshell is currently playing Madame Morrible in the New York production. In Chicago Rondi Reed, the Tony Award-winner and Drama Desk nominee, fills the same part. Los Angeles’s Madame Morrible is played by Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award nominee Carol Kane. The National Tour’s Morrible is filled by the incredible Myra Lucretia Taylor. Worldwide Madame Morrible is played by Harriet Thorpe in London, Barbara Raunegger in Germany, and Maggie Kirkpatrick in Melbourn.
