A Wicked Halloween

Happy Halloween! And for Wicked fans it is a very happy time indeed, as Wicked stars Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty are both returning to the musical in LA. The actresses are going to be bringing the LA show to it’s close on January 11, 2009. Having Espinosa and Hilty back in Wicked is a great way to round-up the show’s incredible run, especially as they are the actresses who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda in LA.

Espinosa and Hilty will be playing alongside Carol Kane as Madame Morrible, David Garrison as the Wizard, Derrick Williams as Fiyero, David Devries as Dr. Dillamond, Eddy Rioseco as Boq and Briana Yacavone as Nessarose.

Since their initial run in LA’s production of Wicked the two actresses have gone on to be very successful in their careers. Espinosa has been seen on the Broadway stage as Elphaba, played Maureen in the final cast of Broadway’s Rent, and in the reprise staging of Flora, the Red Menace. Hilty has recently starred in the out-of-town engagement of 9 to 5. She  has also been seen in the musical Cafe Puttanesca, and Suds.

“Wicked” The Wizard of Art

“Wicked” stars Katie Adams and Shoshana Bean will be performing in Fort Meyers for a fundraiser to support the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center Fundraiser. The Wizard of Arts will take place on Saturday, November 1, in the downtown area of Fort Meyers. This fundraiser shows just how far the musical has come, becoming a theme for major social events.

Katie Adams made her Broadway debut in “Wicked” as Glinda the Good for the show’s national tour. She is now living in New York and is the understudy/standby for eight performances a week. During her stint with the national tour she sang alongside Soshana Bean, and is excited to be joining her on stage once more.

Soshana Bean spent two years as Elphaba on Broadway and in the national tour. The actress has many other exciting credits to her name, including a stint with “Hairspray.”  Her first solo album “Superhero” will be released in December, and she will be performing some of the songs from the album in addition to songs from Wicked.

The gala will include a sit-down dinner with courses inspired by the musical, The Wizard of Oz. The center will be designed as a reflection of the Emerald City theme. All those attending are being encouraged to dress in costumes reflecting the theme. The musical is going to be playing in Fort Myers in March, and is now playing at venues in Atlanta, New York, Chicago and LA. The musical has been inspiring people left and right, and we can be sure that tomorrow there will be lots of little Elphabas and Glindas roaming the streets. Gregory Maguire Thoughts on Wicked

Gregory Maguire has developed the world of Oz from a wonderful, and fearful, fairy-tale world into something deeper. A politically charged world of magic that incorporates religion and marginalization in a corrupt society. The story of Wicked is turned on it’s head in more ways than one as characters explore where they are going, where they have come from and what lengths they are willing to go to in order to truly succeed.

 Yesterdy the cast of Wicked had the opportunity to relay some of their questions to Maguire through a telephone interview that took place between the author and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The cast discovered that Maguire would like to change the end of the play, for just one night, to see how the audience would react to the performance. They also found out that he was partially inspired to write Wicked while living in London during the first Gulf War. Wicked Nearing $1 Billion in Sales in the US

One thing that can be said about Wicked is that it is ridiculously, though deservedly, successful. The musical is now pushing the $1 billion dollar mark in ticket sales and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in the near future. As soon as one show ends another gets ready to begin, keeping the number of US cities hosting the musical at a solid three, with the addition of the National Tour leveling that number out at four.

The incredible amout of money that the show has been raking in has put it on par with the cinema, giving it a ranking far above its fellow musicals. The amount of money that Wicked will bring in over the following years is hardly imaginable as there is also a feature film looming on the horizon. If Maguire’s other books about Oz are also made into films or musicals then one can hardly fathmon the amount of money that this literary and musical phenomenon will bring in.

While the musical is nearing the $1 billion dollar mark in the US, the inclusion of ticket sales in other countries already takes it well past that, with $1.2 billion dollars in sales. International cities hosting the musical include London, England; Tokyo, Japan; Stuttgart, Germany; and Melbourne, Australia. There is also talk of a Dutch production coming to the stage in 2011.

If these figures aren’t enough to draw your interest, then let me remind you that this musical has garnered admiration and acclaim everywhere that it plays. The musical has not become a worldwide success by accident, it is successful because it is incredibly well-written and beautifully performed. Wicked Anniversary

The hit Broadway musical Wicked will be celebrating its fifth anniversary at the Gershwin Theater in New York City, on October 30. On Monday, October 27, 2008, the Empire State Building will be shining green from 12 in the afternoon until midnight in honor of the occasion. The lighting ceremony will include New York’s Elphaba, Kerry Ellis, and Stephen Schwartz who composed the music and wrote the lyrics for Wicked.

The musical has been called “Broadway’s Biggest Blockbuster” by the New York Times, and is now an international phenomenon, reaching as far as Japan. This musical charts out the untold stories of Glinda and Elphaba, the witches of Oz, and their years as teenagers through adulthood. The musical shows how both characters became the women that we first heard about in The Wizard of Oz, putting a very different spin on the story than what we might previously have heard.

The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken

Jody Behar, the famous comedienne and outspoken host of “The View” is now going to be making a one-night appearance as Madame Morrible from Wicked. She is being joined by several other stars including “Sex and the City’s” Mario Cantone, Ashanti, Ugly Betty’s Mark Indelicato, Matthew Settle from Gossip Girl and other.s The show is a one-night benefit being held to celebrate the fifth anniversary of “Wicked.”

Several former “Wicked” stars will also be performing, including Shosana Bean and Stephanie J. Block, who both performed the part of Elphaba beautifully. Jennifer Laura Thompson who played Glinda and Michelle Federer who originated the role of Nessarosa will also be making apperences. The show’s current stars Kerry Ellis and Kendra Kassebaum will aso be in the show.

The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken is being directed by Matt Lenz, with musical direction by Ben Cohn. The show is taking place Monday, October 27 at 7.30pm at the Gershwin Theater in New York City. Who Is Madame Morrible?

Madame Morrible is one of the key characters in the hit Broadway musical, Wicked. The story of Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, is told with the presence of Madame Morrible always lurking in the background. Is she simply the teacher of sorcery that she seems to be at the beginning? Or is she something much more? The teacher who seems to have a close relationship with the Wizard is also the woman who seems to be at the background of every political movement in the land of Oz.

Gregory Maguire Continues

Gregory Maguire is, perhaps, best known for the way that he has carried on the legacy of Oz. Starting with Wicked, the well known book turned musical, Maguire has taken one of the favorite American fairytales and turned it on its head. The story of the Wicked Witch of the West becomes the story of Elphaba an intelligent, beautiful, woefully misunderstood and unfortunately green-skinned girl. Then Wicked was followed up by Son of a Witch, the story of Elphaba’s son. Most recently Maguire has written A Lion Among Men.

A Lion Among Men is considered by some to be Maguire’s best work yet. The story of the Cowardly Lion unwraps that character in surprising ways. Questions arise: Is the Cowardly Lion the young cub that Elphaba rescued from a classroom when she was in school? What has happened since Dorothy destroyed the Witch? What is the destinty of the Cowardly Lion, and his he really cowardly at all? And also, what happened to the lion after he was rescued and before he met Dorothy?
This is just another great new story from Maguire, a fairytale for adults that will turn one of the most famous childhood stories on its head. Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty

On October 31, Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty will be returning to the Los Angeles production of Wicked for the final run of Wicked on the L.A. stage. The two stars, who have since become very successful on the stage, both made their Broadway debuts in Wicked. Their performances won them attention and acclaim and launched them on successful careers in the world of Broadway.

Since starring in Wicked, Espinosa has had her most notable accomplishments playing Maureen in the final cast of Rent and has been seen in the reprise of Flora, The Red Menace. Her most memorable point in Wicked is the song Defying Gravity, which she performed with incredible Hilty is currently starring as Doralee in 9 to 5, the part that was first played by Dolly Parton in 1980.

Wicked is one of the most successful and popular musicals on the stage today. The incredible creative team has done an excellent job. Wicked: The Shaping of a Woman

Wicked is the story of a young girl, Elphaba, who is destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West. The audience watches her through her teen years, as she attends a boarding school and becomes roommates with Galinda, who will one day be Glinda the Good. It is a fascinating story, full of intrigue and modern relevance that turns the story The Wizard of Oz on its head.

The story is an exploration of what shapes the reputation of a person after they are dead, and how accurate the story of a human being actually is. It brings to mind stories such as that of Lecretia Borgia, whose reputation has been brought to question again and again. With some people, especially around the time of her life and death, believing that she was someone incredibly evil, and others believing that she is a deeply missunderstood woman who did the best she could with the cards she had been dealt in life.
