Where the Wicked?

The Broadway hit musical Wicked has now become renown worldwide for its incredible story that is remarkably presented on stage. With an incredible creative team providing: set design, created by Eugene Lee; an amazing book written by Winnie Holzman; and incredible costume design by Susan Hilferty, this wonderful story is an unmatched visual experience. But also fascinating is what has taken place to get to the story to where it is today.

In 1900 L. Frank Baum published what can only be described as an American fairy tale, titled The Wizard of Oz. The story became so popular that two years later a stage production opened up in Chicago, meeting critical acclaim. The Chicago production was followed by an even more fabulous one in New York, becoming one of the biggest successes in the history of Broadway. Then, 36 years later, a musical movie was made by MGM with Judy Garland playing her biggest role to date as Dorthy. It was one othe rare occurrances of a great book becoming a great movie.

In 1995 Gregory Maguire published Wicked, launching an ever-growing fascination with the story. The book Wicked was a response to The Wizard of Oz, turning the story on its head and creating questions in the mind of readers everywhere. Then, in 2003 the musical made its Broadway debut, written as a response to the movie by MGM. With its rich literary and entertainment history, this is a must-see film.
