Elphaba: the Green Witch

TheĀ  actresses who play Elphaba are transformed from woman to weird and wonderful witch from Oz, take place behind the curtain. Using color foundation and MAC Chromacake in Landscape Green, the makeup artist uses a wide Japanese brush to transform the actress from human woman to extrodinary, Ozzian witch. With eyeliner and purple and brown to bring out the eyes and cheekbones, the actress is ready to step out on stage for the first half of the musical.

At the intermission the actress returns to the makeup artist to be transformed into the older, wiser and more mature Elphaba. With the addition of extra lashes, extended eyebrows, more defined cheekbones and extra color on her lips; she is transformed into the adult Elphaba.

The process, which was created by Joseph Dulude II, the makeup designer for the show. The Multi-Purpose: Chromacake which is used for the character of Elphaba is solid until it has been activated with water. (Incidentally, it is recommended by the manufacturer for the creation of fake tatoos.) Because it is a water and not oil-based, the makeup is very gentle to skin.
