Stephen Swarts: The Composer of Oz

As one of the most loved musicals of this decade, Wicked also has one of the most listened to musical soundtracks as well. The man behind the music is Stephen Schwartz. Not only has this New York native written the incredible music and lyrics to Wicked but he has also written for Godspell, Pippen, The Magic Show, The Baker’s Wife and many others.

 Stephen Schwartz was born on March 6, 1948 in New York City. He is a graduate of Julliard and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University. His first notable song was the title score for Butterflies are Free which was also used in the movie version of the play. As the proud creator of the play Wicked the music that he has created is now immortalized as one of, if not the most, popular musical of this decade.
