Menzel Compares Wicked with Concert

Former Elphaba star Idina Menzel is still getting rave reviews for her concert tour and she recently sat down with a reporter from The News and Observer to compare her concert experience with appearing on stage in musicals.  She said, “I think, as artists, we’re always vulnerable. We’re always putting ourselves out there, whether I’m in green makeup or in jeans and being myself. I’m taking a risk in front of people, and it’s what I love to do.”

Menzel definitely knows how to please a crowd.  Before Wicked, she was on Broadway in Rent, which she also appeared in the movie version of.  She was also in the movie EnchantedWicked was the perfect place for Menzel to jumpstart her career.  The Tony Award-winning musical features a unique story, incredible music and extravagant staging.  The character of Elphaba is loved by the multitude of people who have seen the show.  Menzel showed she could shine even through thick, green makeup.

Wicked tells the story of Oz before Dorothy dropped her house in Munchkin land. During Wicked, Elphaba is not yet the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda is not the Good Witch.  They are both just young witches attending magic school.  See the story that catapulted Menzel to fame by getting your Wicked tickets from StubHub.com.

Wicked Breaks Another Record

The citizens of Buffalo, New York must have a pretty mean Wicked streak. Like in many other of the cities it tours in, Wicked has broken box office records in Buffalo.  By selling to over 93,000 tickets in 32 performances, Wicked beat out Disney’s The Lion King, who previously held the box office record.

Shea’s Performing Arts Center, where the musical was held, couldn’t be more pleased. Shea’s President Tony Conte told WGRZ , “We are very happy with the success of Wicked and the experience that we have been able to provide to our patrons. This was a much anticipated production, and we have received wonderful responses from our patrons who thoroughly enjoyed the show.”

As much as the city is pleased by the ticket sales, there was even more gained by the surrounding hotels, restaurants and other businesses.  It is believed that around $20 million was spent in the city because of Wicked.  It is no wonder that Wicked has done so well in Buffalo.  Whether it is a traveling show or a resident show like in New York, Wicked draws in an incredible number of fans. Whispers of a Wicked Movie

Wicked has found success both as a book and a musical and now audiences may have another way to see this intriguing story with a movie based on the musical.  The musical has recently crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and shown it can appeal to audiences worldwide.  Rumor is that the success of the movie Mamma Mia! is seen as a benchmark for how the Wicked movie would do.

Marc Platt is the one eyeing the project along with a remake of Jesus Christ Superstar.  Platt has been the producer of many hit movies like Legally Blonde and the more recent hit Wanted.  Platt has been talking with Wicked’s co-producer David Stone.  Playbill reported that the book writer for Wicked, Winnie Holzman, will write the screenplay.  Casting has not yet been determined. The announcement comes after Platt lengthened his contract with Universal Pictures for five more years.

It is no wonder someone wants to make the Tony Award-winning musical into a film extravaganza.  With the success of its predecessor, The Wizard of Oz, as a feature film, it seems like a logical step to bring Wicked to the silver screen.  To see it on stage, get your Wicked tickets from StubHub.com.

Wicked Tour Boasts Elphaba From London

The touring show of Wicked almost didn’t secure its leading lady to play Elphaba.  Carmen Cusak was ready to give up on musical theater before joining the cast.  She had spent the last 15 years working on London’s West End in shows like Les Miserables and The Secret Garden. After finishing her work there, she wanted to start composing and recording jazz music.  She was soon asked to be an understudy for Elphaba at the hot Chicago production and couldn’t turn down the role after listening to the music.  She tells the Kalamazoo Gazette, “The first time I listened to it I was in a grocery store, and by the time I got up to the checkout, I was crying. I just fell in love with ‘Changed for Good’ and ‘Defying Gravity.’ I thought why hadn’t I gotten on the bandwagon earlier?”

Eight months ago, Cusak moved from the understudy position to the lead role of Elphaba in the touring production.  The music may have drawn her in, but she also enjoys the depth of her role.  She said about Elphaba, “She has to overcome being different and prejudices. She’s very intelligent but a bit of a hothead. She holds people at a distance. My favorite moment is when she decides to let Glinda in as a friend. They just start dancing, and all the anger and hatred between them dissolves. It’s a beautiful moment.”
