Atlanta Gets Ready for Wicked

Many cities around the country that do not have a resident show of Wicked wait anxiously for it to come to their city, and the wait is almost over for the residents of Atlanta. Tickets will begin to go on sale Saturday for the show which will be in town between October 8 and November 2.  Wicked sold out in a mere two weeks the last time it came to Atlanta. The show will be at the Fox Theatre.

Wicked Best Choice on Stage

Benjamin Joins Wicked Cast

Broadway’s Wicked gets a new Wizard of Oz today.  P.J. Benjamin will be joining the cast to take the role he once played for nearly two years with the touring Wicked production.  After leaving the touring production, Benjamin has spent the last six years playing Amos Hart in Chicago.  Some of the women who played opposite him as his wife were Melanie Griffith and Brook Shields.  After that, he appeared as Joy Boyd in Damn Yankees.

Benjamin has no shortage of Broadway experience.  Some of his other credits include The Pajama Game, Sarava and Fosse’s Pippin.  He has also had TV and film experience like in Law & Order and Ice Age, which he lent his voice to.  Benjamin will be in good company with Kerry Ellis, Kendra Kassebaum, Jayne Houdyshell and more stars in the cast with him.

Fans Wonder About Wicked Movie

The talk around tinsel town has been thick with rumors about the movie based on the story of Wicked.  Now the question arises: will the movie be more like the musical or more like the original book by Gregory Maguire.  Most likely because of time and the constraints of stage, the musical had to cut back on some parts of the book.  The book was able to delve deeper into the early life of Elphaba and the problems of Oz.  With movie magic, the movie may be able to bring even more depth to an already popular show.

Young Actors Learn from Wicked

The Townsend Opera Players have decided that Wicked would be the perfect addition to their Summer Teen Workshop.  The workshop helps participants learn about the different aspects of stage performance like auditioning, singing and lighting.  The program is run by other teens, and the participants seem to respond well to peer guidance.  Along with other top shows like Sweeney Todd, the workshop has decided to include the music of Wicked to teach the students about the incredible songs of Broadway.

Wicked Claims Another

Wicked has done it again.  It has taken someone who claims to have little interest in musicals and turned them into a raving fan.  In this case, it is a reporter from the New Zealand Herald who traveled all the way to Melbourne to see the green spectacle.  Like others before her, she was captivated by the interesting plot, incredible music and fantastic staging.  The show has already made some $10 million dollars in ticket sales and plans to stay in Melbourne for quite some time.  Residential shows like Chicago and New York have already shown this musical to be a perennial money maker, and the land down under is no different.

Young Girls Love Wicked

Idina Menzel may be the most famous Elphaba to have taken the stage to date, and her success in that role is carrying over into the mainstream music world.  During a recent interview, Menzel talked about how Wicked has helped her fan base both with young girls and their parents.  She told the St. Petersburg Times, “I get video tapes sent to me from kids singing the songs from the show at the dinner table. It’s the cutest thing ever. I feel a real connection with some of these young girls.”

The girls, and many other fans, first fell for Menzel as the complicated character Elphaba.  Elphaba will later become the Wicked Witch of the West, but in Wicked she is simply a green-skinned witch trying to navigate her way through prejudices and a corrupt government.  She becomes surprisingly empowered through the whole experience, which is what Menzel thinks the parents of these girls love.  She said, “I think parents are grateful because it’s not a Britney Spears thing. It’s based on a green girl who ends up being powerful and strong and beautiful. It is a nice symbol for young kids.”

Wicked is Recession Proof

Is the entire country being hit hard by a recession? Not according to Broadway.  While people might be cutting back on other things, they seem to be saving their money for tickets to shows.  Last week, the sales at Rialto increased about $875,000 for a total of $19.3 million.  At the top of the ticket sales sat the Tony Award-winning phenomenon Wicked.  The show had more than $1.5 million in ticket sales, edging out The Lion King with $1.3 million along with Mamma Mia! and In The Heights, which both had just over $1 million.

Pushing Daisies Star Loves Wicked

Wicked’s buzz around Hollywood is really getting steam.  Kristin Chenoweth, the actress that plays Olive in Pushing Daisies, has commented on wanting to be part of the movie version of the Tony Award-winning production as the Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba.  She is a big fan of the musical but fears it may take years to get a movie production going saying “I’m afraid they’re going to run and run and run Wicked until they get every penny from the road companies.”

Wicked Success Down Under
