Most Definitely Not a Typical Trip to Oz

Gregory Maguire’s tale of “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” is definitely a far cry from the land and characters we met in L. Frank Baum’s classic tale “The Wizard of Oz,” although fans of the story will likely see many similarities and references to the things to come.  Elphaba, who is the Wicked Witch of the West seems to be an ordinary woman, though decisively full of her own ideas and convictions which dominate the way she goes about her daily life.  And it should be clear that the story of “Wicked” shows not how Elphaba turned wicked, but rather how she evolved into a bitter, anguished woman.

The book and play, which is loosely based on the former have become extremely popular not only in the United States, but around the world.  It seems that everyone knows the story of Elphaba and Glinda and how they came to fit into their roles of the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch that Dorothy later encounters down the yellow brick road on her way to meet to the Wizard of Oz.  If you want to share in the joy of such a wonderful and magical story, get your Wicked tickets today!

Hit Musical Wicked Set to Close Next Year in Chicago

Wicked has generated many fans around the world and now the much heralded musical is getting ready to close its curtains once and for all.  Wicked has become one of the top grossing and longest running Broadway musical in Chicago theater history.  Lou Raizin, president of Broadway in Chicago was quoted in the Chicago Sun Times as saying, “It’s been a magical show in every sense of the word.  There’s no question about it, ‘Wicked’ proved that Chicago works as a city that can sustain a long-running show.”

Chicago Company of Wicked Plans to Close

The Chicago production of Wicked which currently plays at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts’ Oriental Theatre is planning to end its lengthy run in January 2009.  When the show closes the musical will have played 1,500 performances and has grossed an impressive $200 million.  Wicked first began its performances in Chicago on June 24, 2005 and the cast currently features Dee Roscioli as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba and Kate Fahrner as Glinda, the Good Witch.  In a recent statement posted on Playbill.com, producer David Stone was quoted as saying, “Of all the companies performing around the world, we have been most proud of the success and accomplishments of Wicked in Chicago.”

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, Wicked is “based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, which turned every Oz myth inside out.  Wicked explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba.  Their life paths continue to intersect through a shared love, entry into the Emerald City and interaction with the Wizard himself.  Eventually, their choices and convictions take them on widely different paths.  Be sure not to miss the show, get your pair of Wicked tickets today!

The Magic of Wicked!
