Stephen Schwartz, the composer for the musical “Wicked” has been recognized for his work many different awards including Academy Awards and Grammy Awards, but Schwartz has never received a Tony Award. Boston University’s On Broadway decided to compensate for the lack of the Tony on Saturday night with a special dedication to the phenomenal composer. Boston University On Broadway Membership Vice President Richie Hofmann was quoted on The Daily Free Press as saying, “This is kind of our dedication to him. Our mini-Tony.” There was high attendance and a great energy throughout the performance and everyone seemed to be having an amazing time.
The performances was titled “When You Believe: The Songs of Stephen Schwartz,” which was basically a compilation of melodies from the composer who has been behind some of the greatest musicals like Wicked, Godspell and Enchanted. Everyone was humming pleasantly along to the beautiful sounds and for Schwartz this great honor might have been even more exciting than winning a Tony.
