The Wizard of Odd

Last week the Desert Star Playhouse debuted its newest parody, called “The Wizard of Odd: A Wicked Comedy,” last Thursday and it certainly provoked much laughter among the joyous audience members.  The title of the show obviously alludes to the fact that the production follows its own winding yellow brick path, offering a story that’s a mashup of the classic film, “The Wizard of Oz” and “Wicked,” the popular Broadway musical.  “The Wizard of Odd” was written by Ben E. Millet, author of “Spamlet” and “My Valley Fair Lady.”

A brief synopsis of the Wizard of Odd, according to an article in the Salt Lake Tribune is “A tornado carries Dorothy from her home in Kamas to the Land of Odd where she is caught up in a power struggle between two witches.  Along the way, she finds a magical pair of ruby sneakers and friends to accompany her on her journey and discovers things never turn out quite as you might expect.”  Don’t miss your chance to see the real production of Wicked, with your own pair of Wicked tickets.

A Well Deserved Tribute to Wicked

Wicked has most definitely been elevated to a sort of pop culture status, much like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which became a pop culture icon.  A small theater company decided that it was time to give “Wicked” that status, so his company called the MisFit Theatre Group, opened thier season with a tribute to the ten-time Tony Award nominated production that gives some insight into the back story of the wicked witch in the musical,”Wicked.”  He notes that after he took his company to see the much loved show, “We went to see it [Wicked] when it came to Atlanta at the Fox Theatre and we were so blown away,” said Robert Seawell, the head of the theater troupe.

His tribute to this respected musical is a showing that “Wicked” is remaining extremely popular among fans.  And although he had a much smaller cast to work with, Seawell admits that, “Each of the actors toss into the pot what they can and the result is a lesson that mirrors the moral of the play.  Don’t underestimate people just because they are different.”  Have your chance to see the marvelous witches with your Wicked tickets.
