“Wicked” Back at Number One!

After a one week drop from the top, “Wicked” resumed its usual place at the number one spot of the Billboard Top Cast Album chart. Usurped last week by “Spring Awakening” in the number one spot, this week “Wicked” calmly and coolly took their spot at the top of the chart once more, moving the DuncanSheik and Steven Sater musical that is “Spring Awakening” into the number three spot. Number two for this week was “Jersey Boys.”

The fact that “Wicked” has resumed its number one place as the most popular and top rated cast album on the market today gives the musical just as much credit, if not moreso, than ticket sales, because everyone knows that it is the music that makes a musical! Rue McClanahan Once was Madame Morrible…

Now that Rue McClanahan has taken her immeasurable talents at comedy and poignancy to debut her solo show on Broadway starting on July 16, 2007, let’s take a look back at McClanahan’s stint as Madame Morrible in “Wicked” on Broadway. Known most prominently for her stint as Rose on televisions “The Golden Girls,” McClanahan’s new show is entitled “My First Five Husbands.”

While McClahan is of course looking forward to her stint on Broadway promoting her solo show, which is also available on the Broadway Books label as well as getting your chance to see her perform the show live, she is still thrilled to have gotten to play such a prominent role in Stephen Schwartz’s hit musical, the memory of which she will always treasure. Her time with the “Wicked” cast at the Gershwin Theater was marvelous for her as McClanahan felt there was quite a lot that could be done with the role of Madame Morrible and she was excited to work with the material.

Now that work ethic has moved onto “My First Five Husbands” but you can all still catch “Wicked” in all its glory - just get your tickets at stubhub.com today!

Lenny Wolpe To Be The Wizard on Broadway

With the continually changing casts and crews in touring productions of any number of shows, it can be hard to keep up with who is playing who at any given time, or who willl still be there by the end of a week’s run in a particular town. Such is the nature of theater, when new projects come up, new offers appear, and collaborations can be worked out between performer and producer. The world of theater is constantly changing and growing, and Wicked is not immune to any of this in its own touring or residential shows.

It has been announced that Lenny Wolpe, who played the Wizard in the original workshops of the Stephen Sondheim-Winnie Holzman smash-hit Wicked, has agreed to reprise the role that he originated for the current Broadway production of the musical. Wolpe will take over teh role beginning July 10, 2007 from the current Wizard David Garrison who will be leaving the company July 8, 2007.

The current cast, featuring the likes of Julia Murney, Kendra Kassebaum, Jayne Houdyshell and Steven Skybell among many others, is excited to have Wolpe on board and audiences can look forward to the change of pace that a new addition to a cast always brings to a show. Wicked’s 2nd Anniversary Celebration!

The 2nd Anniversary of Wicked’s run in Chicago was celebrated last week to much ado and comraderie. Now officially the longest running Broaday show in Chicago theater history, Wicked was toasted with a late-night alke and river cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. Having sold-out shows for the past two years to audiences of over 2,000,000 eager musical theater fans, patrons of this show have come to Chicago from all 50 states and from countries as diverse as Japan and Australia.

Currently playing in an open-ended run at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Wicked is still appealing to audiences of all ages who now all want to be a part of the show that has made history not only in New York City but also in the Windy City itself. Wicked No Longer Top Cast Album Recording!

Well it finally happened. Wicked has been replaced as number one on the Billboard Charts for Top Cast Album. Luckily for all involved, however, the replacement is none other than the Cast Album for the Tony Award-winning musicall, Spring Awakening, so we really should not feel so slighted that this musical has taken over the rule of the land of Cast Albums.

To have been on the charts as long as it had been is a feat for any musical and as such Wicked should be very proud. Both Spring Awakeninga nd Wicked are on the Decca Broadway label, which leads to one great reason that their label should be proud - way to pick some good shows to produce soundtracks for Decca Broadway!

Bear in mind, of course, that our beloved Wicked is not gone from the top of the charts, it simply is not number one any longer, and well it should be for the old hat, with all the talent and the skill, to give a nudge to the younger generation, to help them along and give praise and support. Indeed, Wicked was number one on the Billboards Top Cast Album Chart for 70 of the full 77 weeks that the chart has even been in existence. That is quite an accomplishment! Soap Opera to do a “Wicked”-Themed Episode!

The daytime soap opera “Passions” has always been a supporter of musical theater, hosting an homage to “Chicago” in a 2003 episode of their show and now preparing for a musical episode borrowing from Broadway’s current hit “Wicked.”

The storyline will involve a recent cast member of the Broadway musical “Drowsy Chaperone,” Georgia Engel who will be portraying Esmeralda, an old school friend and the rival of Tabith Lenox, a character on the soap opera. “Passions” airs weekdays on NBC at 2 pm ET, and while an air-date has not yet been mentioned, it might be nice to get to know the characters before this great theme-episode airs.

If, however, you would like to supplement your themed-soap-opera experience with the real show, make sure you visit stubhub.com to get your tickets to see “Wicked”!

Julia Murney as Elphaba

Due to the fact that Ms. Julia Murney is currently owning the role of Elphaba in the Broadway production of “Wicked,” we thought we would take the time today to look at this incredible actress and showcase some of the many reasons you would do well to see her perform this role live onstage in the Big Apple!

Previously seen in shows such as “Lennon,” Andrew Lippa’s “The Wild Party,” “The Vagina Monologues,” and “A Class Act,” Murney has been showing off her singing, dancing and acting chops for years, and she continues to do so in this great role of the Wicked Witch of the West. Also seen on television in such shows as “Sex and the City,” “Ed” and three “Law & Order” episodes, this woman is a consumate performer and is taking her talent full-throttle as Elphaba. To see her perform this role live, make sure you get your Wicked tickets at stubhub.com today!

Wicked: The Tale Of an Outcast

It’s almost strange how every storyline that is considered to be relatable by the masses deals with lead characters being outcasts. Wicked is no different, telling the tale of the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, but if this is the case, then why do we all still feel outcast at various points in our lives? We are obviously not the only ones!

Yet, such is the nature of feeling outcast, of being sure that you are the only one feeling so insecure and doubtful. If only we could realize at younger ages, or in our resepctive situations, that we are the only ones who can let ourselves exist as outcasts or shrug off that title. Come see one more poor soul deal with finding her self-worth in Wicked - get your tickets at stubhub.com today!

Take Your Friends to see Wicked!

Wicked is showing no signs of slowing, but I daresay that fans of the musical and fans of the book are more than happy about that! The Winnie Holzman-Stephen Schwartz phenomenon is based on the book by Gregory Maguire and surely even Frank L. Baum himself would be proud of the prequels, sequels and adaptations that his original “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” brought forth.

If you like the joys of childhood that are brought up when you think of Baum’s original book, or the Judy Garland masterpiece that was the story’s first adaptation to film, you are not going to want to miss out on this musical. Make sure you visit stubhub.com for tickets, and enjoy a night out!
