Wicked is not just a show about a green witch, outcast by society and befriended by a “normal” witch, the duo which becomes fast friends who then have a falling out and finally are left as individuals to fend for themselves and forge their own paths in life. Well, okay it is about these things to a point, very directly, and yet there is much more to it than this. Wicked is a musical about the struggles all people face, to be accepted in a particular group. Yes, Elphaba is ostracized thanks to her skin color, but she is befriended by one who can help make her “popular” and thus she seemingly gains the confidence needed to continue on. However, in the end every situation – whether it be starting a new job, a new class or meeting a new group of friends – is a small battle we must fight all by ourselves, and it usually beings iwth9in ourselves.

Thus this great musical teaches that having inner strength, to do what you know is right, to do what is in your heart, to do what works for your life even if not for anyone elses’, is the only way to truly live your own life. As such, it would do well to have everyone in your family see this musical, and go home tapping their feet to the tines and humming along to the music while you’re at it.
