Wicked: A Great Prequel!

Wicked has an appeal for people that extends beyond the quality of the musical, and we think it has something to do with the prequel factor. We have a sort of obsession within out cultures consciousness to want to know what happened before the story that we are given. Prequels in films sell out much better than sequels do, because the back story is somehow much more interesting to fans who have loved a character or a storyline and want to see how the events they fell in love with came about.

Wicked is much the same way – taking a story that most Americans of a certain generation know by heart, and setting to music the chain of events that made that story possible. Gregory Maquire deserves kudos for coming up with such a novel and Stephen Schwartz should be applauded for his excellence in adapting the storyline for the stage.
