The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by Frank L. Baum and almost immediately became a hit not only with children and their parents but with all those who enjoy good literature and a strong story. Wicked is the sort of show where nothing is not to be enjoyed. A great storyline, phenomenal actors, stunning costumes, great sets and fantastic lighting all come together to make this show a visually-stunning event that everyone in your family and your group of friends is going to want to see. However, it is the music that has given this musical such staying power, and for that we have Stephen Schwartz to thank.
Surprisingly, this composer and lyricist has never won a Tony for his efforts, although many have insisted that Wicked should have been his time to shine at the Tony Awards. Having written his first musical Pippin before he was even out of college, Schwartz has had a long and varied career and has consistently put out incredible shows with incredible music. So go ahead, give Schwartz your thanks and tip your hat for all his hard work. Visit stubhub.com and get your Wicked tickets today!
Wicked is not just a show about a green witch, outcast by society and befriended by a “normal” witch, the duo which becomes fast friends who then have a falling out and finally are left as individuals to fend for themselves and forge their own paths in life. Well, okay it is about these things to a point, very directly, and yet there is much more to it than this. Wicked is a musical about the struggles all people face, to be accepted in a particular group. Yes, Elphaba is ostracized thanks to her skin color, but she is befriended by one who can help make her “popular” and thus she seemingly gains the confidence needed to continue on. However, in the end every situation – whether it be starting a new job, a new class or meeting a new group of friends – is a small battle we must fight all by ourselves, and it usually beings iwth9in ourselves.
Thus this great musical teaches that having inner strength, to do what you know is right, to do what is in your heart, to do what works for your life even if not for anyone elses’, is the only way to truly live your own life. As such, it would do well to have everyone in your family see this musical, and go home tapping their feet to the tines and humming along to the music while you’re at it. Wicked has an appeal for people that extends beyond the quality of the musical, and we think it has something to do with the prequel factor. We have a sort of obsession within out cultures consciousness to want to know what happened before the story that we are given. Prequels in films sell out much better than sequels do, because the back story is somehow much more interesting to fans who have loved a character or a storyline and want to see how the events they fell in love with came about.
Wicked is much the same way – taking a story that most Americans of a certain generation know by heart, and setting to music the chain of events that made that story possible. Gregory Maquire deserves kudos for coming up with such a novel and Stephen Schwartz should be applauded for his excellence in adapting the storyline for the stage. Wicked has won over audiences all over the world, and its worth a look as to what it is about this particular musical that impresses people so much. It cannot be denied that Stephen Schwartz’s score has a power and flair to it that is the sort of feel-good times all good musicals are based on. The costumes are impressive, the set design is decadent and the lighting is gorgeous. The storyline is familiar to people of a certain age, and that is a testament to Frank L Baum more than anything else.
